A-Z JOURNAL
N is for Notebook

N is for Notebook

Marika Maijala’s studio on the island of Harakka is filled with small sketchbooks – or notebooks, as she calls them. Notebooks are her visual diary, where ideas are affirmed.  She wants to keep the free spirit of sketching in her final illustrations, and she sometimes uses the sketches directly from the notebooks, just as they are. It’s fascinating to go through the books, and find all the different versions of the green gardens with orangeries, fountains and sculptures, mysterious people with hats and other subjects already familiar from her published works.

Marika’s different notebooks have been exhibited in her earlier exhibitions: Dark Visions at Näkyvyys-galleria 2017, Journey/Journal at Lennätin galleria 2018 and Par ici, par là at Lennätin galleria 2019. To the new exhibition, I decided to bring only one of the books, to make it even more meaningful. It is the smallest one of the several books Marika had with her in Paris in spring 2019.

Also three works originally drawn on a sheet of a sketchbook, such as the book cover illustration of Ruusun matka (Rosie’s Journey), are framed and presented in the exhibition.

My most important worktool is the notebook – in notebooks I record ideas for new stories and characters as well as express my thoughts and emotions. This is also how my first book as a writer got started: out of nameless, furious drawings I made in my biggest notebooks – RUUSUN MATKA came out in October 2018.’
